Il Capo Pizzeria in Scottsdale: Pizza by the Slice, Handmade Pasta
The Rana family has opened Il Capo Pizzeria, at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale. It’s the latest in the long string of Italian eateries it’s offered to the Valley over the years.
Taking over the former Gelato Spot space, the theme is pizza, baked in two kinds of ovens. Besides individual-size pies done in the wood-burning brick oven, there is pizza by the slice, pan pizzas and specialty stuffed pizzas, fired in a traditional stone-deck oven. All are crafted with techniques owners Angela and Mario Rana learned at a culinary masters program last summer at the Italian Culinary Institute.
The menu spans across housemade charcuterie, handmade pasta, hand-pulled mozzarella, hearth-baked breads, salads, panini, gelato and pastries alongside wines and craft beer.
On the pasta side, the Ranas’ son, executive chef Mario Jr., crafts homemade gnocchi melanzane tossed with cubed fried eggplant, torn mozzarella and ricotta in a marinara sauce ($14.95).
